The Art of Crochet- The Mental Health Benefits

fullsizerender-20In my practice, my clients and I frequently talk about coping skills and other ways to de-stress.  Today, I wanted to spotlight one of my personal favorites-crochet.  I am the type of person who doesn’t feel comfortable unless I’m moving.  I need to keep my hands busy, which helps me to focus and ground myself.  I know I’m not the only one… there are definitely more like me out there! Because of this, I always have objects within reach in my office (i.e. stress balls, putty, kinetic sand, etc.) for both clients and me to use during sessions.  When I’m home, my main go-to is a ball of yarn and a crochet hook.

Let me be upfront.  I am by no means a crochet master.  Not even close.  In fact, I only know how to create items that are square or rectangular, like scarves and blankets (one of my new year’s resolutions is to advance my skills).  When I crochet, I feel relaxed and calm.  The repetitive motions help ground me and feel present.

The internet is filled with countless articles on the physical and mental health benefits of crafting (like crochet).  Here are just a handful of positives to support the art of crochet:

  • Soothes anxiety and depression symptoms by creating soothing, rhythmic motions!
  • Increases concentration and reduces restlessness by being able to move while “sitting still”!
  • Helps to redirect negative thoughts to something productive!
  • Decreases feelings of hopelessness and other negative feelings by working on (and finishing) a project!
  • Helps practice mindfulness!
  • Increases self-esteem (be proud of what you have created and have an opportunity to show your talent)!

So, make a gift for yourself or someone else! Donate your creations to a charity!  Blankie Depot is a great charity located right here in Monmouth County, NJ!

Below, I am including links of websites and videos that can be helpful to beginners!  It’s a new year.  Whether it’s this or something else, teach yourself a new coping skill!
